Guide
Last updated: 6 September 2026
ChatGPT advertising is developing quickly. This guide is updated whenever targeting, formats, availability or measurement change. Every product claim below is limited to what OpenAI documents officially; sources are listed at the end.
ChatGPT Ads lets a company buy clearly labelled sponsored placements alongside relevant ChatGPT conversations. Unlike keyword advertising, relevance is based on the context and intent of the conversation rather than a single search term.
ChatGPT Ads is not simply a new place to paste your Google Ads campaigns. I help companies judge when ChatGPT Ads deserves a place in the marketing mix, what is worth promoting there, and how it should work together with Google Ads, SEO, AI visibility and the website itself.
Yes, you can advertise in ChatGPT. OpenAI sells it as ChatGPT Ads. Ads appear for users on the Free and Go plans, clearly separated from the answer, and OpenAI states that advertising does not change what ChatGPT answers.
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's advertising platform. Advertisers buy sponsored placements that appear alongside ChatGPT answers as their own clearly labelled element — not as part of the generated response.
OpenAI states publicly that ads do not change ChatGPT's answers. You cannot pay to be recommended organically. This distinction matters more than any tactical detail on this page, because it determines what you are actually buying.
In practice there are two different disciplines: paid AI visibility and organic AI visibility. Both can matter, and they are earned in completely different ways.
Paid AI visibility
Organic AI visibility
The same company may need both — but one never substitutes for the other.
Search advertising usually starts from a single query such as "b2b marketing agency". A ChatGPT conversation can reveal a far richer need: the situation, the goal, the market and the obstacle in one message. That context is what makes the channel interesting.
Example 1 — international growth
"We are a Finnish industrial company and want to find distributors in Germany. How should we approach digital marketing?"
Industry, target market, commercial objective and an open question about method, all in one message. Commercially, that is a much stronger signal than a generic keyword.
Example 2 — marketing performance
"Our website gets traffic but hardly generates any B2B leads. What should we change?"
The problem is already diagnosed. This context tells you where in the funnel the pain sits — a keyword like "digital marketing" does not.
Example 3 — Spanish SME
"Tenemos una empresa industrial y queremos empezar a vender en Alemania. ¿Cómo deberíamos generar los primeros leads?"
The same pattern in another language and market: the person describes a starting point and a goal, not a keyword.
These are illustrative examples of the kind of conversations people have. They are not screenshots, and they are not a claim that an advertiser can target those specific conversations. Actual targeting capabilities are described in the next section.
According to OpenAI's own documentation, creating ads for ChatGPT requires a different approach than keyword-based platforms. Instead of matching ads to simple search queries, ChatGPT considers multiple relevance signals, including conversational intent and, when ads personalization is enabled, select signals from a user's broader ChatGPT experience.
The campaign structure is familiar: campaign, ad group, ad. A campaign defines the objective, the conversion event (for conversion objectives), the budget and the start and end dates.
Google Ads
Primarily captures explicit demand: someone is already searching in specific words.
ChatGPT Ads
Can reach a user mid problem-solving, while the need is still being framed into words.
These channels complement each other. Neither replaces the other, and the choice should be argued with data rather than novelty.
The question is not only whether this targeting is possible, but whether this intent deserves budget compared with Google Search.
Checked 6 September 2026 against official OpenAI sources
OpenAI began testing ads in the U.S. in January 2026 and announced on 18 August 2026 that ChatGPT Ads was coming to 31 European markets. An update on 31 August 2026 confirmed self-service access through Ads Manager across those markets.

Availability changes quickly. Always confirm the country-level status in OpenAI's Ads Manager Availability article before planning a launch.
An ad is built from a title, a description and images. The campaign carries the objective and budget; the ad group groups ads that serve the same goal.
OpenAI's guidance stresses that an ad written for ChatGPT needs a different mindset than a search ad: the message has to be useful inside the conversation, not a generic slogan.
OpenAI does not publish every creative specification (character limits, image dimensions) in a form we can restate here as verified fact. Check the current specs inside Ads Manager when you build the campaign.
Advertisers pay within a campaign budget, and both budget and schedule are set at campaign level. Billing and payment run through Ads Manager.
Actual cost always depends on competition, targeting and your own conversion economics. In B2B the number that matters is not cost per click but cost per qualified opportunity.
We deliberately publish no CPC figures or industry benchmarks here. OpenAI has not published official CPC guidance or minimum budgets we could cite, and reliable public benchmark data for a channel this new does not exist yet. Any "ChatGPT Ads CPC" number circulating online is an estimate.
OpenAI provides a measurement pixel and a Conversions API so website conversion events reach ad reporting, plus an Ads API for programmatic campaign creation and performance monitoring.
In practice, measure in two directions: platform reporting tells you channel efficiency, your own analytics tells you whether business value was created. Tag traffic with UTM parameters and push conversions into GA4 and your CRM so channels can be compared on the same terms.
A click is not the objective. The objective is a commercially valuable outcome — a request, a meeting, a deal.
Technically, you can. The Ads Manager is open to you, launching a campaign is not hard, and this guide explains how the platform works. But launching is the small part of the problem. The harder questions come before and after the campaign.
Questions the platform will not answer for you
The point is not to talk you out of doing it yourself. The point is that the competitive advantage comes from decision-making and continuous optimization, not from clicking buttons in an advertising platform.
Sales insights matter here: advertising data shows clicks and conversions, while the sales team knows which enquiries actually become valuable opportunities.
ChatGPT Ads is not automatically the right investment for every company. I can look at your market, current visibility and demand and tell you whether it makes sense now — or whether your budget would work harder somewhere else.
Ask JanneGoogle Ads remains extremely powerful when explicit high-intent demand already exists. ChatGPT Ads becomes interesting when the buying problem is complex and the buyer is still researching, comparing or asking for guidance.
| Dimension | Google Ads | ChatGPT Ads |
|---|---|---|
| User behaviour | Searches in keywords | Discusses a problem |
| Intent signal | Explicit and narrow | Contextual and broader |
| Targeting logic | Keywords, audiences, location | Conversational context and relevance signals |
| Best use case | Existing demand and vendor comparison | Complex problems, research and evaluation |
| Measurement | Mature and established | Pixel, Conversions API, own analytics |
| Market maturity | Mature | Beta, evolving fast |
| Competition | High and priced in | Fewer advertisers, less comparative data |
| Role in the funnel | Capturing demand | Identifying and shaping demand |
ChatGPT Ads is not automatically better. It is a new channel that has to prove its value like any other line in the budget.
An advertising budget does not buy an organic recommendation. When ChatGPT answers without an ad, it relies on the sources it finds and treats as trustworthy. Earning that is a separate discipline, usually called GEO — generative engine optimization.
Organic AI visibility is built from the same fundamentals as good search visibility: clear answers, recognisable expertise, structured content and pages worth citing. The difference is that the outcome is a mention or citation rather than a ranking position.
We do not sell ChatGPT Ads because it is new. Growth Engine combines market signals, search demand, AI visibility, website behaviour, conversion data and your business rules into one continuous decision loop.
ChatGPT Ads is a channel. Growth Engine decides when the channel deserves investment.
When ChatGPT Ads is managed as part of Growth Engine, channel investment can change based on actual market signals.
Growth Engine sees
Instead of automatically increasing the Google Ads budget, the recommendation may be: run a €300–€500 ChatGPT Ads experiment against relevant high-intent contexts, send traffic to a dedicated German landing page, measure qualified conversions and compare cost per opportunity with Google Ads.
Illustrative example — An illustrative example of the decision logic, not a guaranteed result.
If Google Ads already captures high-intent demand profitably and the budget is limited, opening an experimental channel may not be the next best move.
If the website does not convert, another paid traffic source only burns money faster. Then conversion optimisation comes first.

The order matters more than the interface. Measurement first, experiment second.

ChatGPT Ads can be a genuinely interesting new channel, but its value only appears once it is connected to market demand, search data, AI visibility, the website and real sales insights.
The idea behind Growth Engine is simple: we don't decide in advance that ChatGPT Ads must be used. The data and the business situation show where you should be visible and where the next marketing euro belongs.
We do not sell channels because they are new. Let's look at your market, customer and conversion data together and decide whether ChatGPT Ads is genuinely your next best investment.
