Over the past two weeks I have spent more time fixing conversion tracking than building campaigns. It permanently changed the way I think about digital marketing. From now on I will not launch a single Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads or SEO project before conversion tracking has been fully implemented and verified.
The real problem
Most companies spend their time debating questions like:
- Should we invest more in SEO?
- Should we increase the Google Ads budget?
- Should we try LinkedIn Ads?
Very few ask the most important question:
What I discovered in practice
Across several client projects I kept running into exactly the same problems. Companies could not answer questions like:
- Did this lead come from SEO or from paid advertising?
- Which landing page generated the enquiry?
- Which keyword started the buying journey?
- Which campaign produced the customer that eventually bought?
Without reliable attribution every optimisation decision becomes an educated guess. In practice that means budget gets reallocated to the channel that looks good in the dashboard — not necessarily the channel that actually drives revenue.
ROI starts with measurement
A lot of people talk about ROI. Very few have the data required to calculate it correctly. Conversion tracking is not a technical checkbox — it is the foundation of every profitable digital marketing strategy.
A second practical observation
During the same period I noticed another clear trend. Broad Match campaigns are becoming increasingly inefficient in many complex B2B markets. Competition keeps rising. Campaigns that work today require:
- much tighter keyword targeting
- highly relevant landing pages
- accurate conversion tracking
- continuous optimisation based on real business data
Better measurement creates better decisions. This becomes even more important as buyers shift toward international, multi-touch B2B journeys and AI-driven search, where attribution is even more fragmented.
My process has changed
Every future B2B project will follow exactly the same sequence:
- Build conversion tracking.
- Test every conversion event.
- Verify attribution.
- Verify reporting.
- Only then launch campaigns.
It takes slightly longer at the start. But it prevents months of incorrect optimisation later. Two extra weeks of foundational work routinely save six months of wasted media budget.
Final thought
Great marketing rarely begins with better ads. It begins with trustworthy data.
If you cannot confidently answer where your best customers come from and why they convert, you are not optimising marketing. You are guessing.
